What Is National Coming Out Day?

National Coming Out Day is an internationally observed awareness day that recognizes and celebrates lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) individuals and their supporting communities: families, friends, and work colleagues.

The day was founded by Dr. Robert Eichberg and Jean O’Leary in 1988, in celebration of the March on Washington one year earlier, in which 500,000 people marched for LGBT equality. Today, National Coming Out Day is observed in many countries.

The National Coming Out Day is celebrated on October 11.
