Breaking Ground, New York’s largest supportive housing developer, today broke ground on Betances Residence, its latest development in the South Bronx. Breaking Ground’s new building will bring 152 units of affordable and supportive housing to the Mott Haven neighborhood, in addition to a new community facility space, landscaped terrace and courtyard. Betances will be Breaking Ground’s first Passive House project, and among only a handful of supportive residences in the City to embrace such a rigorous energy use standard. The Betances development is part of a commitment by the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) and New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) to identify underutilized land for new affordable homes.

“We are thrilled to break ground on Betances Residence today, and celebrate the creation of 152 new apartments for seniors who have experienced or are at risk of homelessness. Seniors are the fastest growing population in New York, and Betances helps ensure that our most vulnerable neighbors can age-in-place without the constant fear of losing their home,” said Brenda Rosen, President and CEO of Breaking Ground. “We are especially grateful to NYCHA and our government partners, whose commitment to expanding affordable housing is unmatched. It is a privilege to continue to invest in the South Bronx and bring this beautiful, sustainable residence – along with programs for children with our partners at DreamYard – to the Mott Haven…

On Thursday, September 12, 2019, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. and the Supreme Court of Bronx County co-hosted the borough’s annual “Day of Remembrance” to commemorate the families, friends and neighbors who perished in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

The event took place on Lou Gehrig Plaza at E. 161st Street & Grand Concourse in Bronx.

“The World Trade Center attacks shocked the world, but New Yorkers were affected in an especially personal way. Our city was changed forever by this tragedy and every year we remember the lives lost on that terrible day. We will never forget,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr.

You should know that this Saturday, September 14th at 1300 hours, we will be celebrating a street renaming activity in memory of the late Rev. Mario De Jesus.

Rev. De Jesus was a community minister, advocate, and outspoken leader for senior citizens, and the community as a whole.

As the City Councilmember representing the area of Soundview, I was able to obtain approval from the City Council to rename the corner of Randall Avenue & Soundview Avenue.

The street renaming ceremony will begin at 1300 hours and will be a family festival filled with music, food, games, and entertainment for children throughout the day.

All are welcome and encouraged to come as we pay tribute to Rev. Mario De Jesus and celebrate his life. Elected officials, community leaders, family & friends of Rev. De Jesus and anyone else who would like to come together to remember him.

I am Councilmember Rev. Rubén Díaz, Sr. and this is what you should know.

BYD Motors Inc. announced Milea Truck Sales and Leasing as its fully authorized truck dealer to support the New York metropolitan area.

Milea Truck, headquartered in Bronx, will offer BYD’s full line of electric vehicles, including in Class 6 and Class 8 configurations, refuse collection trucks, tandem axle day cabs, yard tractors and what it claimed is the world’s first all-electric refrigerated box trucks.

“Milea Truck Sales is proud to be the pre-eminent leader for clean energy trucks in the tri-state area. We continue to partner with New York City departments, not-for-profits and local businesses to help drive the transition to clean energy trucks,” Milea Truck Sales President Barry Milea said.

We are very mindful of the fact that the Bronx and the surrounding boroughs have some of the highest asthma rates in the country,” he added. “We feel we have a social responsibility to do everything in our power to help fight this by putting more low-emission vehicles on the road, and BYD will be a valuable partner to help us achieve that mission.”

Sales, service, parts and technical support will be provided from Milea Truck’s three facilities in New York City as well as planned sites in Westchester County and Long Island.

BYD’s North American operations are based in Los Angeles. It is a unit of China-based BYD Co.
