A Bronx teen faces felony charges for his alleged role in a mugging in Port Richmond Sunday morning.
Marquis Betterson, 17, and three others approached their 18-year-old male victim on the 700 block of Port Richmond Avenue at about 11:40 a.m., according to police. Betterson asked the victim, “Where are you from?” and another member of the group reached into his sweatshirt pocket and stole a Boost Mobile cell phone, police allege.
The group fled, and the victim pursued, police allege. They fought, and the four muggers beat the victim to the ground, splitting his lip and swelling his right eye, police allege.
Police caught up with Betterson about 20 minutes later, at the corner of Treadwell Avenue and Clinton Place.
He was charged with second- and third-degree robbery, fourth-degree grand larceny, third-degree assault, petit larceny and fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, according to information from District Attorney Daniel Donovan’s office.
Betterson was arraigned Monday in Stapleton Criminal Court and ordered released on his own recognizance until his next court date January 5, 2015.
