They are turning the Concourse into a catwalk.
A three-day fashion festival featuring work from 14 up-and-coming designers will sashay into the historic Andrew Freedman Home on the Grand Concourse this weekend.
Fashionista and chef Flora Montes came up with the idea of Bronx Fashion Week as a way to bolster the borough’s image as a birthplace of cool.
“I wanted the Bronx to have its own identity and own place in the fashion world,” Montes said. “The other boroughs have their fashion events, and now it’s the time for the Bronx to step into the spotlight.”
The event was planned to coincide with the those taking place across the city during the New York Fashion Week.
Not all of the featured designers hail from the borough, but the event will highlight local businesses and vendors.
In addition to nightly runway shows, a daily business expo will allow the public to mingle with designers and reps from local retailers and beauty-related businesses.
On Saturday, Bronx teens will model the street wear of two borough-based designers at the skate park outside the Freedman home.
“It’s going to make people realize how much the Bronx has to offer,” Montes said.
