New York City to registered sex offenders: Get out of our public housing!
Beginning September 28, 2010, the state Department of Criminal Justice Services will provide municipal housing authorities with a monthly list of all registered sex offenders living in their apartments.
The goal is to evict them.
“Everyone deserves to know who their neighbor is and who they are living next to,” said Assemblyman Michael Benedetto (D-East Bronx), who spearheaded the legislation along with state Senator Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester) and Assemblyman Michael Benjamin (D-Morrisania).
The registries are already available on the state DCJS website here, said spokesman John Caher, but the new law will streamline the process.
