The Home Healthcare Workers of America (HHWA) and the International Union of Journeymen and Allied Trades (IUJAT), representing over 30,000 home healthcare aides in New York City, yesterday partnered with NYS Assemblyman Kenny Burgos (D-Dist. 85) and NYC City Councilwoman Amanda Farias (D-Dist. 18) to distribute Thanksgiving turkeys to Bronx families in need.

“HHWA and IUJAT are proud to partner with Assemblyman Burgos and Councilwoman Farias to help bring some holiday spirit to the Bronx,” said Connor Shaw, Political Director and Business Agent, IUJAT, “We are aware that Bronx families may be experiencing tough economic decisions around the holidays, and we are happy to alleviate any stress we can for the community.”

The Bronx has the highest rate of food insecurity of the five boroughs, at 19.7% compared to the citywide average of 14.6%. As inflation remains stubborn and food prices continue to rise through 2023, this initiative aims to provide relief to 100 Bronx families.

About Home Healthcare Workers of America

The Home Healthcare Workers of America (HHWA) is part of the International Union of Journeymen and Allied Trades (IUJAT), established in 1874 and one of the oldest labor unions in continuous existence in the United States. The HHWA is a national union representing home healthcare workers who have joined together to achieve better wages, benefits, and working conditions in their industry. Home Healthcare Workers of America represents tens of thousands of workers in the Tri-State area who have gained job security, protection from unfair termination, guaranteed pay, time off, and benefits. HHWA represents the fastest growing segment of the IUJAT, making the HHWA one of the most successful national unions in the country.

It is the mission of the HHWA to change the playing field for all home healthcare workers and ensure they get the respect they deserve on the job. This begins by pressuring the government to recognize home healthcare workers as skilledworkers and pay them accordingly. HHWA is committed to seeing that these valuable workers and their industry receive the compensation they deserve for the important work they do.
