Today, Edit Shkreli was joined by close friends and family, at the Bronx Supreme Court, as she was sworn in to serve as New York City Civil Court Bronx County, 1st Municipal Court District.

Judge Shkreli, who won in a New York City Civil Court Bronx County special general election to represent Bronx 1st Municipal Court District on November 7, 2023, became the first Albanian to serve as a judge in New York City.

“I want to thank all my fellow Bronxites for your vote of confidence and to all those who lent their unequivocal support during this historic campaign,” said Judge Edit Shkreli. “I am grateful to all of you. I am honored and humbled by the opportunity to serve as your Judge of the Civil Court of the City of New York.”

Born and raised in Shkodër, Albania, Judge Shkreli and her family immigrated to New York City when she was a teenager, because of the civil unrest in her home country. While Judge Shkreli and her family faced many of the challenges that newly-arrived immigrants encounter when they first arrive in America, they immersed themselves into their Bronx community and became an integral part of the borough’s community over the next 25 years.

Judge Shkreli attended Saint Barnabas High School in Woodlawn Heights, which she also credits with instilling in her a sense of service and community engagement. Judge Shkreli would go on to graduate from Hunter College before earning her Juris Doctor degree, graduating with honors in 2011, from New York Law School. Judge Shkreli clerked for Supreme Court Justices in Bronx County and Westchester County handling a variety of complex legal matters involving consumer credit, commercial landlord-tenant, matrimonial, personal injury, and commercial division actions.

During her more than 12-year legal career, Judge Shkreli’s dedication to community engagement only became stronger. Judge Shkreli wanted to give back to her Bronx community which had given so much to her. Judge Shkreli has coached Bronx public school children to compete in the Thurgood Marshall Junior Mock Trial Program. She has served her local community diligently through her active participation in multiple committees of Bronx Community Board # 11. Judge Shkreli also served as a board member for the non-profit organizations Neighborhood Initiatives Development Inc. and Albanian-American Educators Associations. Judge Shkreli is also an adjunct professor at New York Law School.
