A team of students at The Bronx High School of Science is putting its engineering skills to work for a cause that reaches far beyond the classroom: creating prosthetic hands for people who cannot afford them.
Through Manus Nova, a student nonprofit based in the Bronx, the young innovators design, 3D-print, assemble and fit prosthetic hands that recipients receive free of charge. The team has already produced 11 hands and partnered with five organizations in Ghana, Ecuador and Kenya, including MEND, according to Lucas Zelenski, the project’s director.
The initiative brings together technology, practical problem-solving and a commitment to making assistive devices more accessible. Instead of limiting their work to school assignments or personal experiments, the students are developing devices intended to serve people facing a real financial barrier.
And they have built their project around one particularly important principle: the person receiving a prosthetic hand should not have to pay for it.
Making Prosthetic Hands Available at No Cost
Prosthetic devices can represent a significant expense for people who need them. Manus Nova is addressing that challenge by using 3D printing to produce its own designs and relying on donations to cover the materials.
According to the organization’s official website, materials cost approximately $30 per hand. Donations cover those expenses, allowing recipients to receive their devices without paying.

Today, Mayor Zohran Mamdani, Deputy Mayor Leila Bozorg and Department of Buildings (DOB) Commissioner Ahmed Tigani announced New York City has reduced the number of sidewalk sheds by approximately 1,200 since January, a decrease of more than 15% in 10 months.
The administration is also advancing new rules to bring better-designed sidewalk sheds to streets across the five boroughs. The new designs will let more light reach sidewalks and storefronts, improve visibility and create a more welcoming pedestrian experience while maintaining essential safety protections.
Two new designs by the architecture firm Practice for Architecture and Urbanism (PAU) are now on display outside DOB headquarters in Lower Manhattan. Earlier this summer, DOB showcased two additional designs by architecture firm Arup. On Thursday, TIME magazine named Arup’s design one of its Best Inventions of 2026.

Today, President Donald J. Trump announced the launch of the America First Seafood Strategy (PDF, 8.5 MB) and several actions the Trump Administration is taking to support the American seafood industry. Among these actions is the announcement that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is making at least $5 billion available in loans through the Strengthening Processing for U.S. Ranchers (SPUR) Guaranteed Loan Program to expand, improve, and diversify the processing capacity of American meat, poultry, and seafood.
“From our crabbers in Alaska, to the lobstermen in Maine, to the great shrimpers in the Gulf of America, our nation is blessed with incredible men and women who work to bring this bounty to our plates. The Trump Administration has recognized their incredible efforts and is working to provide all the necessary tools for them to succeed with our America First Seafood Strategy,” said Secretary of Agriculture Brooke L. Rollins. “Today’s announcement expanding funding opportunities for seafood processing from USDA highlights our commitment to building out the resources needed for American seafood products to be readily available for consumers. We look forward to continuing to serve American fishermen through the USDA Office of Seafood we created earlier this year, building on President Trump’s America First vision.”
Earlier this year, President Trump signed Executive Order 14424, Promoting Fair Competition in Livestock Markets and Expanding Market Access for American Meat Producers, to support American ranchers by reducing barriers to processing their product for sale to consumers. As directed in the Executive Order, USDA is taking actions to establish the SPUR Guaranteed Loan Program for small and regional beef processors to help continue operations, expand their footprint, and increase diversity of animal proteins being processed.

Freedom was wearing a shirt that read “WOMAN noun. adult human female.” Chicago Sky guard Natasha Cloud approached him during a timeout, yelling and pointing. Freedom stood with his arms outstretched before security and officials removed him from the arena.
Freedom later stated that he was kicked out for supporting women and protecting women’s sports.
