A Bronx community came together Friday for a fundraiser to help the family of a young boy from Puerto Rico battling cancer.

Sebastian, 3, was diagnosed with brain cancer about a year and a half ago. The Cuadrado family moved to the Bronx on New Year’s Eve to get the boy help.

In December, doctors in Puerto Rico told Sebastian that was not going to make it. But the boy’s aunt Sharon Dacosta, who lives in the Bronx, would not back down. She talked to the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore, and Sebastian has been undergoing treatment there since arriving.

His parents are struggling to make ends meet and are living in a shelter, so Dacosta reached out to the nonprofit the GB Project, which collected toys, clothes, toiletries and money for the family at a fundraiser at the Side Street Lounge on Blondell Avenue.

Sebastian will be in the Bronx for at least six months getting treatment. In the meantime, his family is searching for permanent housing.
