Lehman College will host its second annual Bronx SciFest on Wednesday, February 26, 2014.
Selected high school students from around Bronx will gather at Science Hall to present their research projects to a panel of judges. The winner will receive a cash prize and a four-year scholarship to Lehman, plus the opportunity to compete at the New York City Science and Engineering Fair.The festival aims to connect Bronx high school students with scientific research. The festival began when Intel Corporation provided Lehman with a planning grant to pilot a science fair program with six Bronx middle schools and high schools. Bronx Sci-Fest represents an important step in establishing robust science opportunities among the borough’s students.
Last year, 36 students participated in the festival; this year, there are more than 40 contestants. Keyko Sánchez, a 2013 graduate of Herbert H. Lehman High School, won last year’s top prize for her project which focused on developing wires made of amino acids for fuel cells.
Each student is paired with a mentor who provides supplemental guidance on projects. Last year, Sánchez worked on her project in collaboration with the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and received mentoring from Lehman Chemistry Professor Gustavo Lopez.
This year’s Bronx Sci-Fest will begin in Science Hall with the presentation of posters at 10:30 a.m., with an afternoon awards ceremony in the Historic Music Building’s Lovinger Theatre.
