Bronx Community College (BCC) recently celebrated the 30th anniversary of its CUNY Language Immersion Program (CLIP), recognizing three decades of helping immigrant and multilingual students strengthen their English-language skills and prepare for academic and professional success.
Founded in 1996 by CUNY Central Office members Leslee Oppenheim and John Mogulescu, CLIP was created to address the challenges many English language learners face while simultaneously taking ESL and college-credit courses. The program’s immersive model provides 25 hours of intensive English instruction each week, helping students build the language, academic and personal skills needed to succeed in college.
The anniversary celebration featured a historical presentation with archival photographs, remarks from longtime faculty and staff, recognition of student achievement and the annual Pina Capone Essay Contest, where students reflected on how the program impacted their lives.
Over the years, CLIP has evolved into more than an English immersion program. Students from across Latin America, Africa, Asia, Europe and the Middle East have built a multicultural community while participating in museum collaborations and educational trips to places such as Washington, D.C. and the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library in Hyde Park.
“CLIP students are very grateful for the assistance that we give them,” said CLIP Director Jason Davis, who has been with the program since its inception. “It’s very fulfilling to see that you’re changing people’s lives and helping them move forward.”
According to college data shared during the celebration, CLIP students…

By Jonas BronckNon-Zionist Jews across the Western world need to hear a stark and urgent warning. The belief that loudly criticizing Israel, rejecting Zionism, or distancing oneself from the Jewish state will provide protection against rising antisemitism is a profound and dangerous delusion. History and present realities both prove that antisemites do not make careful distinctions between Zionist and non-Zionist Jews. When the forces of hatred are unleashed, they target Jews as a people. No ideological purity test or public disavowal of Israel will grant immunity.
This warning is not offered lightly. It comes from hard lessons written in blood across centuries. Jewish communities have repeatedly attempted strategies of assimilation, appeasement, and ideological separation, only to discover that such efforts provide no lasting safety. The phrase “Never Again,” born from the Holocaust, was meant to be a permanent vow of vigilance and strength. Today, some Jews treat it as a flexible slogan while actively undermining the very state created to ensure that vow is never broken again.
The Fatal Error Of Believing Distancing Brings Safety
Many non-Zionist Jews operate under the assumption that by positioning themselves as critics of…

Today, Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) announced The Peninsula in the Bronx has been selected as the second site for the City’s municipal grocery store program. The 20,000-square-foot store in Hunts Point is expected to open in 2027 and serve as an economic anchor for the South Bronx community.
“Working families in the Bronx have been forced to pay the price for a city that keeps getting more expensive while government looks the other way. That has to change. Our administration is putting communities like Hunts Point at the center of our work to address the affordability crisis,” said Mayor Mamdani. “Making sure every New Yorker can buy fresh, affordable groceries in their own neighborhood is a key part of our affordability agenda. We are proud to begin this work in the South Bronx and remain committed to opening a store in every borough before the end of our first term.”
“No family in the Bronx should have to choose between rent and groceries,” said Deputy Mayor for Economic Justice Julie Su. “This summer, we will issue a request for proposals to bring in operators who meet our affordability standards, and we will have a store open in Hunts Point by 2027. This is what public investment looks like when it is done right — government setting the terms, holding to a timeline, and making sure the benefits reach the families who need them most.”
Last month, the administration announced La Marqueta in East Harlem as the first site selected for the municipal grocery store program. The Mamdani administration plans to open one store in each borough by the end of the Mayor’s first term.

Today, the Aspen Institute’s Project Play initiative released its “State of Soccer New York City / North Jersey” report, a first-of-its-kind analysis of the region’s youth soccer ecosystem commissioned by the Laurie M. Tisch Illumination Fund as part of its Play to Thrive initiative. The report examines barriers to participation and identifies opportunities to expand access for children across the region ahead of the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup, which will hold its final in New Jersey on July 19, 2026.
Children turn to soccer for connection, joy and belonging — yet costs, infrastructure shortages and systemic inequities often restrict access to young people who can benefit the most from play. At a moment of heightened national attention on the sport, the report uncovers a unique opportunity to rebuild youth soccer as a more equitable, accessible and youth-centered system.
To uncover these findings about the youth soccer ecosystem in New York City and North Jersey, Aspen’s Project Play conducted a sport-specific “State of Play” analysis that included interviews with local leaders and policymakers, a regional community summit, focus groups with children, parents, and coaches, a data analysis of field availability versus demand, and a survey of nearly 700 youth soccer players. The survey lets children share their soccer experiences directly, so local leaders can improve programs based on their feedback.
