A Staten Island judge has temporarily blocked Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s signature pied-à-terre tax, delivering an early and well-deserved setback to one of the most aggressive wealth-extraction schemes in recent New York City history. On Monday, Justice Wayne Ozzi of State Supreme Court in Richmond County issued a temporary restraining order that pauses the city’s chaotic rollout of the surcharge on high-value second homes. The ruling came in direct response to a lawsuit filed by homeowners who argued that the Mamdani administration had botched the implementation, published sensitive personal information, and improperly shifted the burden of proof onto ordinary New Yorkers.
The decision forces the city to take down its public list of roughly 900,000 properties, blocks further enforcement actions based on that list or the notices already mailed, and freezes the September 18 deadline for seeking exemptions. A further hearing is scheduled for August 31. City Hall has already announced it will appeal. For now, however, the judge has applied the brakes to a policy that was sold as a simple way to make the ultra-wealthy pay their “fair share” and that has instead produced confusion, privacy violations, and legal challenge.
This is not a minor procedural hiccup. It is the predictable result of an administration that prioritizes political messaging over competent governance.

The U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network has delivered meaningful regulatory relief to American small business owners. Today FinCEN issued a final rule that permanently removes the requirement for U.S. companies and U.S. persons to report beneficial ownership information under the Corporate Transparency Act. The rule takes effect upon its publication in the Federal Register. FinCEN also announced that it will delete previously reported information submitted by U.S. persons from the beneficial ownership information database. Foreign entities that qualify as reporting companies will still be required to report beneficial ownership information for foreign individuals.
This decision marks a significant victory for privacy, practicality, and the everyday entrepreneurs who form the backbone of the American economy. Millions of small business owners no longer face the threat of federal reporting mandates that created compliance costs, legal risk, and unnecessary government collection of personal data.
What The Final Rule Actually Does
The Corporate Transparency Act originally required a vast number of domestic companies to file beneficial ownership reports with FinCEN. Those reports demanded detailed personal information about the individuals who owned or controlled the entities. For many small businesses, the process involved identifying beneficial owners, gathering sensitive identification documents, navigating complex definitions, and meeting strict deadlines under threat of civil and criminal penalties.
The final rule ends that obligation for U.S. companies and U.S. persons. Domestic entities no longer need to submit or update beneficial ownership information. Individuals who previously obtained FinCEN identifiers are exempt from further update or correction requirements related to those identifiers. FinCEN will actively remove previously filed data associated with U.S. persons from its database. The agency has confirmed it will delete information it reasonably believes belongs to U.S. persons,…

The 2026 FIFA World Cup halftime show turned out to be a major disappointment. Old songs, mediocre performances, and a complete lack of energy left millions of viewers around the world underwhelmed. What should have been a spectacular celebration of global culture and musical excellence felt tired, uninspired, and disconnected from the excitement of the tournament itself. Organizers missed a golden opportunity to deliver something fresh and dynamic. Instead, they served up a nostalgic rerun that failed to capture the spirit of the moment.
This was supposed to be a showcase for the best in entertainment during one of the biggest sporting events on Earth. The co-hosted tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico deserved a halftime performance that matched the scale and ambition of the competition. What viewers received fell far short of expectations. The setlist relied heavily on dated material that lacked the vitality needed to energize a global audience. Performers went through the motions without delivering the passion or innovation that great halftime shows require. The result was a flat, forgettable intermission that did little to enhance the overall World Cup experience.
The Missed Opportunity For Fresh Talent
The halftime show organizers had the chance to introduce the world to emerging stars and current hits. Instead, they played it safe with familiar acts and classic songs that have been performed countless times before. This conservative approach may have appealed to certain demographics, but it left younger viewers and…
