SOMOS Community Care, New York’s Social Care Network for Bronx County, which includes serving District 15, the poorest congressional district in the United States, is launching an urgent initiative to bring assistance and solace to thousands of Bronx residents who rely on SNAP benefits and related government assistance services. On Wednesday, November 5, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., SOMOS will hold a series of community events to help Bronx families affected by the loss of SNAP benefits.
“We cannot allow our people to go without food,” said Dr. Ramon Tallaj, Chairman of SOMOS. “Just like we did during the CoViD-19 pandemic, SOMOS is going into the community to connect residents with the resources they need most today as well as with additional health-related assistance services they can rely on longer-term through the Social Care Network.”
The effort will connect Bronx residents with essential resources including non-perishable food, pantry access and on-site assistance. Faith based organizations, community leaders, and national food brands such as FreshDirect and Goya Foods, known for donating millions of pounds of food to disaster relief efforts, are supporting this initiative.
During the height of the CoViD-19 pandemic, Dr. Ramón Tallaj mobilized his network of community physicians to address both the public health crisis and rising food insecurity. Under his leadership, SOMOS established emergency food banks across New York City’s hardest hit neighborhoods, delivering more than 2 million meals to families in need.
The food distribution will take place this week at four Bronx locations this Wednesday-Friday, with an additional four sites to be added next week.
