Middle school students from DREAM Charter School went to the Bank of America Winter Village at Bryant Park on Monday, December 09, 2019, for a holiday shopping experience hosted by Bank of America. The field trip served as a teachable moment about the importance of financial education and giving to others this holiday season.

As part of the experience, students took part in an interactive Better Money Habits workshop and then went “Secret Santa” shopping for their classmates. The day concluded with a reflection on what they learned about spending, saving and sharing followed by a gift exchange.

“The holiday season can be a difficult time for anyone to make smart spending decisions, including our youth,” said Connie Verducci, market executive, Bank of America in New York City. “At Bank of America we are committed to helping people of all ages build their financial know-how whether through financial education events like today’s lesson and shopping exercise with these promising East Harlem students or through our free Better Money Habits program.”

Students, including Ava Fortson from the Bronx, pictured above, were chosen based on their strong academics and attendance during the first semester of the school year.

“We encourage our students every day to ‘dream big,’ so we’re thrilled for them to have the opportunity to experience the magical Bank of America Winter Village at Bryant Park,” said Eve Colavito, DREAM’s Chief Education Officer. “Our mission is to level the playing field for our students, and a fundamental way to do that is to ensure proficiency in financial literacy. Learning these skills in a setting where they are also giving gifts to others is a fantastic experience that the students will take with them, and we thank Bank of America for giving us this opportunity.”

The Bank of America Winter Village at Bryant Park features more than 170 holiday shop vendors, which will remain open until January 05, 2020. The village also has the only free admission ice-skating rink in New York City, open until March 1, 2020 and Bank of America cardholders save 20 percent on skate rentals all season long!
