A knife-wielding man was fatally shot by police after he threatened to stab his roommate in Bronx on Monday night, law enforcement sources said.

The man with the knife apparently chased another man out of a home and around a vehicle near Prospect Avenue and East 181 Street in the Belmont section after 8:00 p.m., police said. But the armed man did not obey orders, police said. He had been chasing another man in the street.

The attacker used this knife to lunge at police in Bronx, cops said. After the two officers confronted the tenant and repeatedly directed him to drop the knife, police say the tenant turned towards the officers with the knife in his hand. He was taken to a local hospital but did not survive.

Police say the entire encounter was caught on both officers’ body-worn cameras. Two officers responding to the scene were injured in a auto crash about three blocks away, at E. 180th Street and Prospect Avenue. Several blocks away, three officers were hurt when their cruiser crashed into a utility pole as they were heading to the scene of the dispute. People should expect a large police presence in the area.

The police said they had recovered a partly serrated knife with a black handle from the scene. No other suspects are being sought, the NYPD said.

No additional information was immediately available.
