What does it truly mean to say that “all men are created equal?” Nearly two and a half centuries after those words were first written, they continue to stand at the heart of the American identity. They shape how the nation understands freedom, citizenship, and belonging. Yet from the very beginning, that promise has also been challenged, stretched, and redefined through struggle, sacrifice, and the steady pressure of voices demanding to be heard.

Equality in America has never been a finished achievement. It has been an aspiration, a declaration of intent, and at times a contradiction. The nation was founded on ideals that proclaimed universal rights, even as entire groups of people were excluded from those rights in practice. This tension between principle and reality has shaped American history more than any single law, election, or war.

The Community Conversation Becoming America, part of Humanities New York’s Speaking of Revolution series, invites participants into that long and unfinished dialogue. It asks Americans to examine equality not as a static phrase carved into parchment, but as a living commitment—one that must be tested, renewed, and defended by every generation.

Today, a case was filed on behalf of the City of New York in New York State Supreme Court against predatory delivery app Motoclick for egregiously violating the city’s Delivery Worker Laws. Motoclick, which operates a restaurant-facing delivery service, blatantly ignored the Minimum Pay Rate and stole directly from workers’ paychecks, with shocking tactics that include charging workers a $10 fee for canceled orders and deducting the entire cost of refunded orders from workers’ pay – sometimes claiming that workers owed the company money. DCWP estimates that Motoclick and CEO Juan Pablo Salinas Salek owe workers millions in stolen pay and damages and seeks to shut the company down completely.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani joined Deputy Mayor for Economic Justice Julie Su, DCWP Commissioner Sam Levine, and advocates from Worker’s Justice Project and Los Deliveristas Unidos to announce the lawsuit.

Commissioner Levine also today launched a compliance blitz, sending notices to Instacart, DoorDash, Grubhub, Uber, and others warning them to adhere to new Delivery Worker Laws taking effect on January 26, 2026. This includes Local Laws 107 and 108, related to tipping protections; Local Law 113 related to delivery worker pay transparency; and Local Laws 123 and 124, related to expanding the minimum pay rate to more delivery workers, timely and weekly payment rights, and improved bathroom access for delivery workers. As a report DCWP released earlier this week revealed, DoorDash and Uber engineered design tricks in their interfaces to lower workers’ tip earnings by $550 million.

These actions come as Commissioner Levine ramps up efforts to crack down on predatory delivery apps, reverse worker losses through aggressive enforcement of the Delivery Worker Laws, and hold companies and individuals accountable for ripping off the hardworking, majority immigrant deliveristas who keep New…

ew York City FC has selected Legends Global as Etihad Park’s Food and Beverage Operating Partner. Legends Global will handle premium suites, concessions, club spaces, and catering throughout the venue. For the Club, this decision goes beyond operations. Food and beverages are being treated as part of how the stadium will feel on matchdays. NYCFC has been open about wanting Etihad Park to reflect the city itself, and that goal shows up clearly in how dining has been planned from the start rather than added later.

Etihad Park & the Long Lead-Up

Etihad Park is set to open for the 2027 MLS regular season in Willets Point, Queens. The privately financed stadium will seat 25,000 people and will be the first soccer-specific venue in New York City. Planning has been underway for years, and decisions around food and beverage were part of early discussions. Legends Global brings experience from major venues across the world, but the Club has emphasized that local direction will shape how that experience looks and feels inside the stadium on a regular matchday.

On-Field Attention Mirrors Off-Field Momentum

Interest in New York City FC continues to build as the team competes in a demanding MLS league. During the 2025 season, the club entered several playoff matches as an underdog. Despite performances this season, New York City FC were still seen as the underdog when it came to the MLS title. During the tournament, online…
