Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s plan to open five city-owned grocery stores across New York City is moving forward with taxpayer funding, subsidized pricing, and preferential treatment that private operators cannot match. The initiative, a centerpiece of his affordability agenda, would place government-backed stores in direct competition with existing neighborhood grocers. Two lawsuits filed against the City argue that the plan will inflict real harm on smaller businesses, many of them immigrant- and minority-owned, while exceeding the City’s legal authority.
The Multicultural Business Coalition, representing hundreds of smaller stores, filed the pair of suits in State Supreme Court in Manhattan. One claims the plan discriminates against Latino and Asian business owners and violates state civil rights laws and equal protection guarantees by creating an uneven playing field. The second challenges the City’s authority to establish and operate the stores in this manner. Both actions underscore a basic reality: when government enters the retail grocery market with subsidies and waived costs, independent stores pay the price.
The Structure Of The Plan
Mamdani has allocated approximately $70 million in capital funds to develop the five sites, one in each borough. The city will own the land and cover major overhead costs including rent, construction, and property taxes. Private operators selected through a request for proposals will handle day-to-day management under contracts that require them to pass savings to customers. A core basket of staples—produce, meat, bread, milk, and similar essentials—will be offered at a 30 percent discount. Other items will sell at regular market prices.
The first store is planned for Hunts Point in the Bronx, with a target opening in late 2027. A second location at La Marqueta in East Harlem is scheduled for 2029. All five…

Former NBA player Enes Kanter Freedom was ejected from the Indiana Fever’s victory over the Chicago Sky after a courtside confrontation. Freedom was wearing a shirt that read “WOMAN noun. adult human female.” Chicago Sky guard Natasha Cloud approached him during a timeout, yelling and pointing. Freedom stood with his arms outstretched before security and officials removed him from the arena.
Freedom later stated that he was kicked out for supporting women and protecting women’s sports. He has already declared himself eligible for the 2027 WNBA Draft specifically to highlight that the league’s rules do not clearly define the word “woman.” The incident captures the central contradiction now running through women’s athletics: stating a basic biological fact is treated as a provocation, while the erasure of sex-based categories is treated as progress.
The Shirt & The Reaction
The message on Freedom’s shirt is a dictionary definition. It is not a slur. It is not a call for violence. It is the ordinary meaning of the word that has existed for centuries. Yet in the current climate of professional women’s basketball, that definition is radioactive. Natasha Cloud’s decision to confront Freedom courtside turned a silent statement into a public spectacle. Security then removed the man wearing the shirt rather than the player who initiated the confrontation.
Freedom’s response was consistent with his record. He has spoken repeatedly about the importance of protecting female athletes from the physical advantages that male…
