Former supermodel Tyra Banks paid a surprise visit to some 400 screaming, crying teens at the High School for Teaching and Professions, where she also promoted her new book, Modelland.

Tyra answered questions and congratulate the students on beating 90 other schools so far in a nationwide competition to improve attendance rates. The Bedford Park school has raised its numbers by 4% as part of the Get Schooled Attendance Challenge.

She gave some inspirational words to the students and even helped them work on their model walks and fitness.

During the visit, a 16-year-old Chris Rodriguez got down on one knee and asked “Will you marry me?” Expertly sidestepping the bold proposal, Banks quipped, “Why don’t you ask me that question 10 years from now?”

As it relates to her book, the stress of writing it was so intense for Tyra that she actually started losing her hair. In a revealing interview with the Wall Street Journal, the supermodel talks about the toll proving herself as an author (and a Harvard Business School student) took on her health.

She believes what led to her situation was the combination of all her projects and deadlines.

Tyra has since been able to move past the stress and has come into her own as a businesswoman, something she credits her business program at Harvard for helping her do.

Tyra finishes up her program in 2012.
