This summer, students from our International High School partners in the Bronx, Queens, and Brooklyn had the opportunity to enroll in work-based learning programs to build real-world job and entrepreneurial skills. Besides refining their photography, they worked on set as shoot producers, edited and curated their work for exhibition and publication, and learned from experts in the field.
Approximately 150 students from International High School at LaGuardia Community College, Flushing International High School, International High School at Lafayette and Claremont International High School were able to continue their photography practice throughout the summer in Josephine Herrick Project-led intensive classes. The schools, in partnership with the NYC Department of Education and the city’s Summer Youth Employment (SYEP) program and outside funders for students not eligible for SYEP, provided students with stipends for their work in these programs.
The students also took their cameras outside to capture summer in the city. Field trips included visits to the Queens Zoo and Botanical Gardens, Coney Island, Photoville, Fotografiska, and Bronx Native Studio, a multidisciplinary hub for creatives within the community.
