Yesterday, the Jets dodged a lame-duck situation when head coach Rex Ryan agreed to a multi-year deal. However, the Jets could in fact opt out of his contract before the 2015 season if things do not work out well.
Rex’s new deal can make him only safe through 2015. The money in Rex’s new deal is not thoroughly guaranteed according to a source close to the situation. If the Jets miss the playoffs again next year, they have the ability opt out of Ryan’s contract before 2015 and he would not receive all of the money on his contract.
Rex may be receiving this contract because of his playoff successes in the past.
