On Tuesday, May 19, 2026, Jim Ziolkowski, founder, president, and CEO of buildOn, will address members of the Class of 2026, their families, and friends during Fordham University’s Gabelli School of Business Graduate Diploma Ceremony. The ceremony, which will be held at 4:00 p.m. in the Rose Hill Gymnasium on Fordham University’s Rose Hill campus in the Bronx, will celebrate the achievements of 721 graduate degree candidates.

Ziolkowski’s career trajectory is certain to provide inspiration for business school graduates who seek to do well and do good. After graduating cum laude from Michigan State University with a bachelor’s degree in finance, he traveled around the globe, visiting some of the poorest countries and witnessing the suffering that extreme poverty causes. Once back in the United States, Ziolkowski started a career in corporate finance at GE, but an experience he had while backpacking in Nepal stuck with him. In an isolated village, he witnessed the opening of a school that would provide access to the education needed to break the cycle of poverty and illiteracy. It was this spark of hope that prompted him to take a huge professional gamble.

Driven by a passion for service, his faith in the power of education as an agent of societal change, and his belief that anyone can make a difference, he quit his job and founded buildOn in 1991, serving as the organization’s president and CEO. Under his leadership, more than 200,000 students in the U.S. have contributed 2.6 million hours of local service, strengthening…

Today, Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) announced The Peninsula in the Bronx has been selected as the second site for the City’s municipal grocery store program. The 20,000-square-foot store in Hunts Point is expected to open in 2027 and serve as an economic anchor for the South Bronx community.

“Working families in the Bronx have been forced to pay the price for a city that keeps getting more expensive while government looks the other way. That has to change. Our administration is putting communities like Hunts Point at the center of our work to address the affordability crisis,” said Mayor Mamdani. “Making sure every New Yorker can buy fresh, affordable groceries in their own neighborhood is a key part of our affordability agenda. We are proud to begin this work in the South Bronx and remain committed to opening a store in every borough before the end of our first term.”

“No family in the Bronx should have to choose between rent and groceries,” said Deputy Mayor for Economic Justice Julie Su. “This summer, we will issue a request for proposals to bring in operators who meet our affordability standards, and we will have a store open in Hunts Point by 2027. This is what public investment looks like when it is done right — government setting the terms, holding to a timeline, and making sure the benefits reach the families who need them most.”

Last month, the administration announced La Marqueta in East Harlem as the first site selected for the municipal grocery store program. The Mamdani administration plans to open one store in each borough by the end of the Mayor’s first term.

Today, the Aspen Institute’s Project Play initiative released its “State of Soccer New York City / North Jersey” report, a first-of-its-kind analysis of the region’s youth soccer ecosystem commissioned by the Laurie M. Tisch Illumination Fund as part of its Play to Thrive initiative. The report examines barriers to participation and identifies opportunities to expand access for children across the region ahead of the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup, which will hold its final in New Jersey on July 19, 2026.

Children turn to soccer for connection, joy and belonging — yet costs, infrastructure shortages and systemic inequities often restrict access to young people who can benefit the most from play. At a moment of heightened national attention on the sport, the report uncovers a unique opportunity to rebuild youth soccer as a more equitable, accessible and youth-centered system.

To uncover these findings about the youth soccer ecosystem in New York City and North Jersey, Aspen’s Project Play conducted a sport-specific “State of Play” analysis that included interviews with local leaders and policymakers, a regional community summit, focus groups with children, parents, and coaches, a data analysis of field availability versus demand, and a survey of nearly 700 youth soccer players. The survey lets children share their soccer experiences directly, so local leaders can improve programs based on their feedback.
