The Northwest Bronx Democratic Alliance formally endorsed Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice at a meet-and-greet in Riverdale on August 12, 2010.

“Leadership is about working with communities hand-in-hand from the ground up, not opining from ivory towers in Albany or Wall Street,” said club founder Tony Perez Cassino. “DA Rice is a fresh face who has dedicated her career to engaging communities as a prosecutor, a legal advocate for crime victims and the manager of one of the largest public interest law firms in the state, the Nassau District Attorney’s Office. She thinks and works like a community activist and that’s exactly what we need to keep our attorney general’s office moving forward. We are proud to endorse her.”

Saul Scheinbach, the NBDA’s current president, added: “I’ve seen DA Rice’s work and know that she is exactly the community-minded public official who will work for New Yorkers and their day-today concerns.  We will work hard to help elect her as our next attorney general.”

The Northwest Bronx Democratic Alliance organizes independent and reform-minded Democrats mostly from Riverdale, Kingsbridge, Norwood and Wakefield and works with existing community organizations to address issues such as housing, education, transportation and parks.

Perez Cassino, who oversees the pro bono activities at the law firm of Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy, has extensive roots in community advocacy. He founded the NBDA and the Coalition of Riverdale/Kingsbridge Schools and has served as the chairman of Bronx Community Board 8 and the director of Pro Bono Services for the NYS Bar Association. He served as aide and counsel to Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz and ran for City Council in 2009. He currently serves on the NYC Charter Revision Commission.

“It’s hard to find a Democratic club with a stronger background in community service and activism on issues that affect people’s day to day lives,” DA Rice said. “Tony Perez Cassino and the Northwest Bronx Democratic Alliance know how to use politics and government to win fights for neighborhoods, which is what I try to do as a legal advocate myself. I’m honored to have their endorsement and look forward to working with them to bring real representation of their concerns to the attorney general’s office.”

DA Rice has also been endorsed by Bronx Councilman James Vacca and Congressman Joe Crowley, the Queens Democratic Organization chair who also represents parts of the Bronx. She has been the district attorney of Nassau County since 2006, when she beat a 31-year Republican incumbent to become the first woman elected DA in Long Island’s history. She has garnered national acclaim for her groundbreaking work targeting Internet crimes, drunk driving and corporate responsibility.

DA Rice was the highest vote-getter at the recent State Democratic Convention and has raised more money than any of the five other candidates for attorney general. She is running in the Democratic primary for attorney general on a platform to reform Albany through a more empowered office; to hold the bad players on Wall Street accountable to the public; and making the Office of the Attorney General more responsive to more common, local problems like those she is addressing as a district attorney. DA Rice is the only candidate who is not a product of Albany or Wall Street, and the only one who has experience running a large office of hundreds of public interest attorneys. She has both the independence and the experience that is needed to help restore the public’s faith in state government.

DA Rice has also been endorsed by U.S. Representatives Tim Bishop of Long Island, Brian Higgins of Buffalo and Carolyn McCarthy of Long Island; former AG candidate and Criminal Justice Services Commissioner Denise O’Donnell and women’s rights activist Gloria Steinem. Since announcing her bid for attorney general, DA Rice has also received the support of the NYS and NYC Building & Construction Trades Councils, the 100,000-member Retail, Wholesale, Department Store Union (RWDSU), the 23,000-member United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1500, the 20,000-member United Food and Commercial Workers Local One, the 65,000-member Nassau/Suffolk Building and Construction Trades Council and EMILY’s List. She has also been endorsed by the Kings, Queens, Nassau, Suffolk and Albany County Democratic chairs, as well as those from the upstate counties of Chemung, Greene, Oswego and Washington.
