On Saturday, October 02, 2021, at approximately 0145 hours, police responded to a 911 call of a motor vehicle collision, located at the northbound New England Thruway in the vicinity of Gun Hill Road, within the confines of the 45th Precinct in the Bronx.
Upon arrival, officers discovered a 20-year-old male and a 16-year-old male, each with head and body trauma.
EMS responded to the location and transported both aided males to NYC Health + Hospitals / Jacobi, where the 20-year-old male remains in critical condition and the 16-year-old male succumbed to his injuries on Monday, October 04, 2021.
Further investigation by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Squad determined that vehicle #1, a 2004 Honda Accord, operated by the 20-year-old male with the 16-year-old male passenger, was traveling at a high rate of speed, northbound on the New England Thruway, in the right traffic lane, approaching the exit ramp to Gun Hill Road, and abruptly changed lanes, from the right lane into the center travel lane. This change of lanes put vehicle #1 into the path of vehicle #2, a 2007 Honda Accord, operated by a 47-year-old male, traveling within the center lane of traffic.
Vehicle #2 did strike vehicle #1, causing vehicle #1 to rotate counter-clockwise, coming to a rest in the grass median on the west side of the roadway.
The operator of vehicle #2 also remained at the scene and was transported, via EMS, to NYC Health + Hospitals / Jacobi, in stable condition.
Following proper family notification, the deceased has been identified as indicated.
