A formerly weed-choked lot in New York’s South Bronx will be a classroom for a new venture called Farm School NYC: The New York City School of Urban Agriculture.
Starting in January, the school will offer a two-year course to help people learn how to grow vegetables, market their crops and make healthy food a bigger part of their communities.
Jacquie Berger, the venture’s executive director, says the school isn’t accredited. But she says a number of colleges have expressed interest in partnering with it to offer accreditation in the future.
Organizers see the effort as part of a national movement to provide urban residents with more food choices by having their neighbors grow and sell the vegetables themselves.
