Bronx Arts and Science Charter School is proud to announce that its students will debut a large-scale, student-created mural at the 5th Annual Viva la Sound Environmental Festival, hosted by City Island Oyster Reef on Saturday, September 13, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Ambrosini Field, 200 City Island Avenue.

The event brings together families, local organizations, and environmental advocates for a day of live music, arts, and community celebration. This year, Bronx Arts and Science Charter School students will showcase their talent and vision through a mural inspired by the beauty and importance of marine life.

A Celebration of Student Creativity and Community

Over the past several weeks, students have worked collaboratively under the guidance of their art teacher, Mrs. Ihtiyar, to design and paint a vibrant underwater scene. The mural, featuring coral reefs, fish, and ocean ecosystems, reflects both their artistic skills and their understanding of environmental stewardship.

“This project represents more than art—it represents voice, collaboration, and community pride,” said Principal Kucuk of Bronx Arts and Science Charter School. “Our students are sending a powerful message about protecting our environment while also showcasing their creativity.”

Mrs. Ihtiyar, the school’s art teacher, shared: “My students poured their hearts into this mural. They learned not only painting techniques but also about the ecosystems they were bringing to life. Watching them work together and grow through this project has been truly inspiring.”

One 7th-grade student expressed: “I loved working on the mural because it felt like we were making something that would last. When people see it, I hope they think about how important the ocean is.”

Festival Highlights

Alongside the mural unveiling, festival-goers can look forward to:

  • Live music and entertainment
  • Free tastings from local restaurants
