On his first official day as president of Bronx Community College (BCC), President Johnson convened a Town Hall for students, faculty and staff, giving audience members a sense for his bold, student-centered leadership approach. His 100-Day Presidential Road Map includes a listening tour, where he will meet with stakeholders to understand their hopes and challenges and collectively create a shared vision that will inform BCC’s strategic plan.
“I want to get to know each of you,” said the President to a packed Roscoe Brown Playhouse, promising transparency and accountability throughout his tenure. “I will lead by listening, walking the campus, and engaging with students. We exist because of our students so we need to hear our student voices. Every decision we make has to be based on what’s best for our students.”
Already known on the national community college stage as a staunch equity-minded advocate for students, President Johnson brings to BCC a passion for supporting students with diverse life experiences, goals and backgrounds. His goal is to amplify BCC’s impact and the vital role the College plays in the Bronx.
“We are the crown jewel of this community. We need to draw our community members to campus, establish relationships with local employers, school superintendents, and principals, and we have to have open houses,” he added.
Dr. Johnson acknowledged the great work that has been done at BCC and talked about moving forward with a sense of purpose and passion to “reimagine who we are”. The framework President Johnson will implement during his 100-Day Road Map and beyond is based on three pillars: Belonging, Collaboration and Communication. Each of these will be critical to ensuring that BCC continues to pave the way for opportunity and social mobility for every student.
As always, he concluded his remarks with his hallmark sign-off: “Better days are ahead of you. And the best is still yet to come.”
