The event, which celebrates National Autism Awareness Month and is free to the public, aims to provide an opportunity for members of the community to learn more about autism and therapeutic riding and its benefits.

Therapeutic horse riding.

Flying Manes Therapeutic Riding will host Mr. Rupert Isaacson, author of the international bestselling book “The Horse Boy” and producer of its documentary companion of the same name, at the Riverdale Equestrian Center located at Broadway & W 254th St. in Bronx, NY on April 9, 2010 from 3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.

Therapeutic riding lessons allow children and adults with autism and other special needs to experience the many benefits of horseback riding. Lessons follow NARHA guidelines and focus on developing riding skills, coordination, and strength through exercises and games, while improving riders’ cognitive, emotional, and social skills. Riders are taught horsemanship skills appropriate for their age and level of ability as well as the foundations of equine behavior and equine care. Throughout all activities riders are encouraged to challenge themselves in new and exciting ways.

The free day of therapeutic riding is open to participants who contact Flying Manes Therapeutic Riding prior to the event to arrange for a pre-riding assessment to ensure safe participation.
