For today’s children, smartphones and social media are part of everyday life. They connect with friends, discover new interests, and learn about the world through digital platforms that are constantly evolving. For parents, however, keeping up with those changes can be overwhelming.

As a parent, I regularly hear concerns from friends about how difficult it is to monitor the apps their children use and understand the safeguards that are in place. New platforms emerge constantly, each with its own privacy settings, age requirements, and parental controls. Expecting parents to navigate that patchwork system on their own is unrealistic.

Recently, I traveled to Washington, DC, to meet with elected officials and discuss ways to better protect children online. One proposal we discussed was the App Store Accountability Act. Rather than requiring parents to manage safety settings separately across dozens of apps, the bill would establish age verification and parental permissions at the app store level. Parents could verify their child’s age once, creating a more consistent and streamlined system for app downloads and access.

Current safeguards often rely on self-reported birthdates, making it easy for underage users to bypass restrictions. A centralized approach would help close those loopholes while giving parents greater confidence that age-based protections are being enforced.

From my conversations in Washington, I know that lawmakers recognize that parents deserve better tools to help keep their kids safe in today’s digital environment. The App Store Accountability Act offers a commonsense approach that would simplify digital parenting, strengthen accountability, and help create a safer online experience for children and teens. It should pass with broad bipartisan support.
