As the ball droped on Times Square at midnight today, an additional 2.6 million U.S. residents will bring in the New Year up from a year ago.

Three months before the start of the decennary count of the country’s population, the Census Bureau estimates that on January 1, 2010, the total U.S. population will total 308,400,408. That’s an increase of 2,606,181, or 0.9 percent, from when 2009 began.

During January, one American will be born every eight seconds, while another person will die every 12 seconds, according to Census estimates. Every 37 seconds, someone from another country will immigrate to the United States.

Census questionnaires are scheduled to be mailed to all American households in March. April 1 marks the official day the completed forms should be returned.
