There is a new music venue in town. The Bronx Music Hall is now officially open to the public.
The 14,000-square-foot theater, which cost more than $15 million, is the borough’s first new entertainment space in almost 50 years.
Developed by the Women’s Housing and Economic Development Corporation (WHEDco) and designed by WXY, the Bronx Music Hall and its adjacent 10,000-square-foot plaza anchor a mixed-use development with 305 affordable apartments in the Melrose Commons neighborhood of the South Bronx.
In addition to its performance, rehearsal, and teaching spaces, the Bronx Music Hall will also serve as the permanent location of the Bronx Music Heritage Center.
The unveiling of the center’s new home will occur during Bronx Music Hall’s Grand Opening Weekend, simultaneous with OHNY Weekend.
The venue includes a 250-seat performance theater, an exposition hall, a dance studio, a recording studio, and amphitheater-style seating for outdoor shows.
Bobby Sanabria, a Grammy-nominated Bronx performer and co-artistic director of the Bronx Music Heritage Center, and Kerry McLean, WHEDco’s vice president of community development, joined “The Rush Hour” on Friday to talk about the new venue.
The Bronx Music Hall is an Open Access site and can be visited free-of-charge without any advanced tickets.
Tickets are required to participate in the Bronx Music Hall’s Grand Opening Weekend programs and performances.
