Police say a man who allegedly was illegally selling MetroCards at a Bronx subway station died shortly after being taken into custody.

The NYPD says the suspect became unconscious and unresponsive while being placed under arrest on Monday around 2:30 p.m. EMS transported the suspect to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The medical examiner will determine the cause of death.

Police say the 25-year-old suspect was observed selling the MetroCards on the mezzanine level of the East 161st Street station. He ran when police approached him but was apprehended a short distance away.

The investigation into the incident is continuing. His name was withheld pending family notification.
