“Gun violence is a scourge on this nation and last night’s shooting of an officer in Soundview does not represent who we are as Bronxites.
“With new leadership in Washington, we must show zero tolerance for illegal guns in our streets. We need to put pressure on the federal government to pass stricter gun control laws. Our communities are full of firearms that come from other states where buying a gun is an easy job.
“On behalf of all Bronxites, we are wishing the detective who was shot yesterday while in the line of duty in the confines of the 43rd precinct, a speedy recovery and thank you for your service. The gun suppression division continuously puts their lives on the line to protect all of us.
“We are relieved that the suspect has been apprehended and another gun was taken off the streets.
“It is time to confront America’s deadly gun culture with federal reform and start protecting our children, families and dedicated officers from firearms at home, at work, and on our streets,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr.
