After receiving an unexpected contract extension less than a week ago, head coach Rex Ryan is excited to receive the new deal and is ready to get it going.

Manish Mehta of the NYDN talked to Rex Ryan as well us and  other reporters yesterday at the Senior Bowl, to discuss the new contract and what he expects to gain out of it.

“I just plan on kicking some butt.” Rex told Mehta. “I just want to be a part of this team and this is where I want to coach.”

Even though Rex got an multi-year extension, GM John Idzik and company still has specifics on his contract. Rex is only safe through 2015 and if the Jets miss the playoffs again Idzik and owner Woody Johnson can fire the five-year head coach and not pay him all of the money on his contract. Rex talked briefly on the situation to Jets Stream.

“I know that my future of being the coach of the New York Jets is on the line, but I’m not worried about that.” Rex told Jets Stream. “My main goal is to make the playoffs and get this team in the best shape possible to do so. Will it be tough? Absolutely, but I’m confident in our guys to go out there and get things done. I’m just ready to move forward.”

Ryan will most likely use this playoffs or fired scenario as motivation to reconstitute playoff hopes for the New York Jets.
