Those who have a passion for guitars will be in heaven on Sunday, February 9th at 3:00 p.m., when three exceptional guitarists bring their Guitar Passions to Lehman Center for the Performing Arts in Bronx.

Sharon Isbin

Romero Lubambo

Sharon Isbin the preeminent guitarist of our time, will share the stage with two of her album collaborators, American Jazz artist Stanley Jordan and Brazilian jazz master Romero Lubambo.

With a mixture of classical, virtuoso jazz electric, acoustic and electric guitars in solo, duo and trio combinations, playing music from Argentina, Brazil, Venezuela, Paraguay and Spain, the three performers are sure to guarantee a melodic Sunday afternoon.

Acclaimed for her technique, lyricism and versatility, headliner Sharon Isbin started studying guitar at age 9. Her family moved to Italy where she studied classical music with Spanish guitarist Andres Segovia. She later studied with Italian guitarist Oscar Ghiglia and pianist Rosalyn Tureck. The Yale School of Music graduate has given sold out performances in music halls throughout the world and has served as Artistic Director/Soloist of festivals she created for Carnegie Hall and the St. Paul Ordway Music Theater. Sharon conducted her own music series and acclaimed national radio series Guitarjam at the 92nd Street Y. Having recorded more than 25 albums ranging from Baroque and Spanish/Latin to crossover and jazz fusion, she won a 2010 Grammy Award via her CD Journey to the New World.  She is also the winner of Guitar Player magazine’s Best Classical Guitarist Award.

Chicago born virtuoso jazz electric guitarist and pianist, Stanley Jordan, is certain to be a crowd pleaser as he regales the Lehman Center audience with the innovative touch technique he perfected. His touch technique is an advanced form of two handed tapping on the guitar’s fretboard instead of the traditional strumming and picking used by many guitarists.  Jordan has performed with the likes of Benny Carter, Art Blakey, Kevin Eubanks, Stanley Clarke, Kenny Rogers and Dizzy Gillespie. His release “Magic Touch” reached #1 on Billboard’s jazz chart for 51 weeks. Performing worldwide as both a soloist and bandleader, the 4-time Grammy nominee was also nominated for an NAACP Image Award.  He also released an album entitled “Friends” in 2011.

Lastly, the third guitarist Romero Lubambo, is in demand not only for the cool, sophisticated rhythms of his authentic Brazilian sound but also for his fluency in the American jazz tradition. Born in 1955 in Rio de Janeiro, Lubambo studied classical piano and musical theory as a young boy. Switching to the guitar at age 13, he graduated from Rio’s Villa-Lobos School of Music in 1978.  Known for his brilliance with the guitar, Lubambo was called the “best Brazilian guitarist there is by Herbie Mann. A master on both the acoustic and electric guitars, Romero is a premier finger-stylist. One of the most frequently recorded guitarists in the world Lubambo has performed and collaborated with many outstanding artists which include Michael Brecker, Yo-Yo Ma, Diana Krall, Wynton Marsalis, Paquito D’Rivera, Gato Barberi and Harry Belafonte among others.

Those looking to spend a musical afternoon may find Guitar Passions the ideal way to spend the day via the eclectic sounds of Jazz, Latin Jazz and classical guitar at Lehman Center for the Performing Arts where interested parties can purchase tickets by calling the box office at 718-960-8833 or via going on line at www.LehmanCenter.org.
