Mayor Bill de Blasio today celebrated the appointment of Nina Kubota as President and CEO of the New York City School Construction Authority (SCA). Kubota had previously served as SCA’s Senior Vice President for Capital Plan Development & Implementation, a position she first assumed in January 2020. She has served at SCA in various roles since 1998. Kubota replaces Lorraine Grillo, who left the post earlier this month to become the City’s Senior Advisor for Recovery. Kubota will be the first Japanese American woman to lead the agency.

“The School Construction Authority has done heroic work throughout this pandemic. Their hard work has kept New York City’s children safe and delivered the gold standard of school safety in the United States. Nina Kubota has the experience, vision, and tenacity to build on this mission – and deliver a full school return this fall that keeps every student in our city safe in the classroom,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio.

“I have been fortunate to be part of the incredible team at the SCA and have spent years working hard to meet the Mayor’s goal of creating more than 83,000 new seats to address overcrowding in our schools and modernizing our existing school buildings. Today, I am proud to lead an agency that keeps moving forward, constantly innovating to ensure that we design and build schools that meet the current needs of our students and teachers while continuing our commitment to safety, quality and integrity,” said Nina Kubota. “Thank you to Mayor de Blasio for the opportunity to continue serving the people of New York City and providing our children with the 21st century learning environments to learn and grow.”

“Our school communities have overcome so many obstacles this year to make safe, in-person learning a reality, and we would not be where we are today without our hard-working partners at the School Construction Authority. Nina Kubota will build upon the tremendous work of Lorraine Grillo and partner with us toward a successful, full reopening in the fall,” said Schools Chancellor Meisha Porter.

“Nina Kubota is a tireless public servant who knows this agency inside and out. I know she will lead this agency with the energy and vision our city’s schools deserve,” said Senior Advisor for Recovery Lorraine Grillo. “There is no better job in government than ensuring our children have a safe place to learn, and Nina is the perfect choice to lead the agency forward.”

Nina Kubota has served at the New York City School Construction Authority since 1998. Prior to serving as SCA’s Senior Vice President for Capital Plan Development & Implementation, Kubota served as Vice President of Capital Plan Management from 2013-2020. She has also worked in various roles at SCA’s Architecture and Engineering Department and its Administrative Services Division. She is a graduate of Queens College and Baruch College.
