Yesterday, a press conference was held at the New Settlement Community Center in the Bronx to announce that Grand Street Settlement has been awarded over $18.4 million by the Office of Head Start. This funding will support Head Start programming for 583 children and their families, expanding the agency’s preschool offerings to serve over 1,400 children in total. With this significant investment, Grand Street Settlement will establish six new center-based programs in the Bronx and one in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, alongside over seventeen family childcare partnership programs across both boroughs.

New Settlement in Assembly District 77 will be home to part of these new Head Start programs at their Community Center located on Mount Eden Avenue in the Bronx. This expansion marks a crucial step forward in providing additional resources for children and families in the district. Earlier this year, Assemblymember Landon Dais allocated $150,000 to New Settlement for their YAOI program, aimed at guiding youth towards career readiness and finding their career paths. The addition of a Head Start program at New Settlement will further enhance resources available to youth in the community.

“If you really want to transform New York, it starts with our children,” says Assemblymember Landon Dais. This funding will lead to the establishment of six new community-oriented centers in the Bronx, with specific locations to be determined. Increased Head Start programs in the Bronx will ensure more comprehensive services for children and families, contributing to a brighter future.

Beyond their renowned high-quality, affordable childcare programs, Grand Street Settlement is known for its robust youth programming and services for families and older adults. This funding and partnership will further empower them to positively impact the lives of Bronx children and families.
