The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today announced crews completed cosmetic and functional renovations of the Pelham Bay Park 6 subway station in the Pelham Bay section of the Bronx. This work is part of New York City Transit (NYCT)’s Re-NEW-Vation program, which utilizes planned weekend service outages to perform upgrades, repairs, and enhanced cleaning in stations within a 55-hour window, providing customers with overhauled stations when service interruptions end on Mondays.

Over the last weekend, transit workers installed new LED fixtures to brighten darkened areas, repaired concrete tripping hazards, cleaned service and emergency lighting, stripped and repainted surface areas, restored benches, and replaced tiling along staircases. The station uplift also includes refurbishment of transit employee breakrooms and restrooms within the station.

“Customers consistently say cleanliness matters and we’re listening by providing faster, cleaner, and safer service to improve the customer experience,” said NYC Transit President Richard Davey. “Now the Pelham Bay community can see the results of a brighter and cleaner station.”

“A constant concern I hear among my constituents is the cleanliness and condition of public transit. Pelham Bay serves as the gateway to our community and I appreciate the MTA taking steps to renovate the station and spruce it up before the beginning of our busy summer season,” said Assembly Member Michael Benedetto (D-Bronx, 82nd District).

“Pelham Bay Park station has long-needed renovations to support a clean, safe, and comfortable commute. As ridership grows, we must ensure our stations provide a welcoming atmosphere that improves the quality of life, delivering an enhanced subway system for the community. The program puts public safety first by elevating the subway experience, and I look forward to the community reaping its benefits,” said Council Member Marjorie Velázquez.

“We are excited and pleased over the completion of New York City Transit’s Re-NEW-cation program aimed at improving service for the thousands of commuters that access the Bronx’s Pelham Bay Park station each day,” said Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson. “As a major transportation hub located near Westchester County with transfer options for commuters heading to Queens, Manhattan, as well as parts of the west and south Bronx, straphangers can now enjoy the newly enhanced lighting, new signage, repainting, grouting and more. I want to thank MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber and his entire team for this program aimed at providing faster, cleaner, and safer service both here in our borough and citywide.”

Pelham Bay Park is the thirtieth station to be enhanced with an upcoming refurbishment planned at Myrtle – Wycoff Av on the m line. In total, NYCT plans to complete 50 “re-new-vations” by the end of the year.

About the Station Re-NEW-Vation Program

The Station Re-NEW-vation Program is one of the major initiatives in New York City Transit’s Faster, Cleaner and Safer plan to improve the subway customer experience. The program was initiated with a soft launch over the summer of 2022 on the b line in the Bronx, including deep cleaning and renovating components of nine stations along that line, while stations were closed for state of good repair work underway in tunnels. Cleanliness is one of the top five attributes customers cite in surveys that would improve satisfaction and encourage increased ridership. In response, NYC Transit developed this program integrating renovations into planned station outages.
