For first-time mothers, having a trusted support system can make all the difference. That spirit of encouragement, education, and community was on full display during the Montefiore Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP) Parents’ Day Celebration, where families gathered to celebrate milestones, build connections, and recognize the remarkable journey of parenthood.

The event, held in partnership with Montefiore HERO Dads, brought together first-time mothers participating in the Montefiore Nurse-Family Partnership, an evidence-based home visiting program that supports women from pregnancy until their child’s second birthday.

Among those celebrating were Biannelis Almonte, her 15-month-old daughter, Serenity, and their home nurse, Tamara Garel, RN. Their story reflects the meaningful relationships that develop through the program, where registered nurses become trusted partners, offering guidance, education, and encouragement during one of life’s most important chapters.

A Strong Foundation for Families

The Nurse-Family Partnership is a partially federally funded maternal and child health initiative supported by the New York State Department of Health, Montefiore Home Care, and Montefiore Medical Center. The program is designed to improve the health and well-being of both mothers and children through personalized, evidence-based support delivered by registered nurses.

Beginning during pregnancy and continuing until a child’s second birthday, nurses work closely with first-time mothers to promote healthy pregnancies, prepare parents for childbirth, encourage positive parenting practices, and help families access valuable community resources.

This long-term relationship empowers parents with the knowledge and confidence they need to give their children the strongest possible start in life.

Celebrating Success Together

Parents’ Day was more than a celebration. It was an opportunity for families to connect with one another, share experiences, and recognize the accomplishments they have achieved throughout their parenting journeys.

Children laughed and played while parents exchanged stories, creating an atmosphere filled with optimism and hope. The event also highlighted the importance of fathers and other caregivers, reflecting the partnership with Montefiore HERO Dads and reinforcing the message that raising healthy children is a shared responsibility.

For many participants, the celebration served as a reminder that they are part of a caring community that continues to stand beside them every step of the way.

Proven Results That Benefit the Bronx

The Montefiore Nurse-Family Partnership has produced measurable improvements in maternal and child health outcomes. Through consistent nurse home visits, the program helps reduce preterm births and unnecessary emergency room visits while increasing breastfeeding rates and ensuring children receive recommended immunizations.

These positive outcomes extend beyond individual families by helping children enter life healthier and better prepared for future success while strengthening communities across the Bronx.

Programs such as Nurse-Family Partnership demonstrate how early intervention and preventive care can have lasting benefits for generations to come.

More Than 600 Families Supported

Since its inception, the Montefiore Nurse-Family Partnership has helped more than 600 families navigate the challenges and joys of becoming first-time parents.

For families like Biannelis Almonte and little Serenity, the program represents much more than healthcare. It offers reassurance during uncertain moments, celebrates milestones both large and small, and creates lasting relationships built on trust and compassion.

As Parents’ Day concluded with smiles, laughter, and heartfelt conversations, one message stood above all others: every child deserves a healthy beginning, and every parent deserves support along the way.

Through dedicated nurses, committed community partners, and evidence-based care, Montefiore continues to make that vision a reality for hundreds of Bronx families every year.
