Longtime Port Richmond resident Louis Scamardella, 82, a retired truck driver and hardworking family man, died Tuesday in Clove Lakes Health Care and Rehabilitation Center, Castleton Corners.
Born on Staten Island, he lived in Port Richmond until 1955, when he relocated to Bronx. He returned to Port Richmond in 1971.
Mr. Scamardella graduated from McKee High School.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, seeing duty in Korea, and attained the rank of sergeant.
Mr. Scamardella worked for many years as a truck driver for Stella D’Oro, first at its Bronx location and then at its Jersey site. He retired in 1985.
He and Maria Buzzeo met when both were working for Stella D’Oro in the Bronx. She had come to New York City in February 1956 aboard the SS Andrea Doria, which sank in May of that year. The couple wed in July 1959.
Mr. Scamardella enjoyed bowling and fishing. He especially enjoyed playing cards and visits to Atlantic City with his family.
Surviving, along with Maria, his wife of 55 years, are his sons, Robert and Paul; his daughter, Lisa Costa, and his sisters, Theresa Santero and Anna Scamardella.
The funeral service will be Tuesday at 8 p.m. in the Martin Hughes Funeral Home, Concord. Arrangements include cremation.
