Last week the Theodore Roosevelt Educational Campus (TREC) swimming team held its 3rd Annual Swim-A-Thon. Nine swimmers participated to raise money for the campus swim program.
They were supported by parents, teachers, administrators, coaches and friends. The swimmers swam a total of 1061 laps (25 yards each) with two swimmers passing the 200 mark. The money will be used to buy supplies and needed equipment. The event was directly supervised by swim teachers Mr. Stewart and Mr. Mavrek. The supporters sponsored the students with a certain amount for each lap. The event rose over $500.
“Swim-A-Thon shows the progress of our swimming team members. This is a really challenging event. Every year they swim longer distance. We are very satisfied with their results. The next Swim-A-Thon will be held in the school year 2012/13. It is also our contribution to the The American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) Let’s Move in School initiative. Our students need knowledge, skills and confidence to be physically active for a lifetime”, said Mr. Michael E. Stewart, the TREC varsity swimming team coach.
Mr. Srecko Mavrek, the newly elected President-Elect of the NYC Zone of the NYS AHPERD, is impressed with students’ results, but also with their values and character. “It is evident that our swimmers have built proficient swimming techniques, as well as endurance and flexibility. These students are not only great swimmers. They have developed respect, responsibility, caring, fairness and citizenship. They became role models to other students. We plan to organize more similar events in the framework of Let’s Move in School initiative to provide a comprehensive school physical activity program”, said Mr. Mavrek.
