City Council Member Fernando Cabrera and The Committee for Hispanic Children and Families, Inc. have partnered to provide free bilingual U.S. History and Civics classes in the Council Member’s Bronx community-district for adults interested in completing the citizenship and naturalization process.

Free Bilingual Civic Education For Morris Heights Residents

Funded by the New York City Council’s Immigrant Opportunities Initiative, this service was designed to prepare people for the U.S. Citizenship test.  The first group of classes will commence on Tuesday, April 5, 2011 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the PS/ MS 279 located at 2100 Walton Avenue in The Bronx.  Importantly, you must be a parent of a child at PS/ MS 279 to participate in a class.

“These aren’t just classes; they are pathways to the American Dream. By preparing those who came to this country seeking a better life for the citizenship process, we are contributing to the success of our community’s future and I am happy to support programs like these that bring resources straight to my constituents,” said Council Member Cabrera.

“Our classes reflect our commitment to education and our belief that it is the key to success.  We have designed this service to meet the needs of the new Latino community in New York City and are happy to be able to offer it to the residents of the Morris Heights area,” said Elba Montalvo, Executive Director of The Committee for Hispanic Children and Families, Inc. “Our civic education and citizenship classes teach participants about the democratic process, the importance of active citizenship and ways to serve the community.”

The free classes offered in Spanish and English include U.S. History, U.S. Government, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights.  In addition, The Committee for Hispanic Children and Families will continue to offer advice on citizenship requirements and assist people in completing their Naturalization Application. For more information or to register, please call for Andrea Decena at PS MS 279 at 718-584-6942.
