Local leaders have endorsed a proposal that would convert an empty armory in the Bronx into a national ice center.

Proposal calls for nine ice rinks and youth hockey and skating programs.

The group, led by Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. announced its support for the proposal on Thursday. Diaz estimated it would cost $275 million.

He said it was the best of six proposals submitted to the city for redevelopment of the Kingsbridge Armory.

The city Economic Development Corporation is expected to select a winner by the end of the year.

A competing proposal that has local support would create a $100 million Chelsea Market-style center. It would contain weekend stalls for artists and merchants and a six-screen theater and rock-climbing wall.
