The grand opening of the Bronx Community Care Service, offering low-income families state-sponsored health insurance programs for children, attracted community members to a ribbon-cutting ceremony yesterday. The event also featured various activities for children.
Amerigroup Community Care opened its first facility in the Bronx to help lower-income families access free and low-cost health care. Eligibility is dependent on income and household size. Once a patient is accepted, the facility helps to manage his or her care in partnership with doctors in nearby Bronx hospitals and clinics.
“What’s unique is [that] it’s centrally located in an area where there is a high need among residents for quality health care,” said Diana Acevedo, manager of community relations for Amerigroup.
Anthony Woods, vice president of sales and marketing for Amerigroup, noted that the facility serves predominately the Spanish and Caribbean ethnic communities.
“I think it’s an opportunity for us to reach an audience that we probably haven’t had much access to in the past,” he said.
