United Charter High School Humanities II (HUM II) welcomed New York State Assembly Member Chantel Jackson for a sit-down interview with reporters from the high school newspaper, The Knightly News.

“I know what it’s like to live in public housing, to use food stamps,” Jackson said. “When I was growing up people didn’t look like me or talk like me. I thought it would be powerful for me to come into public service with the experiences I’ve had.”

Reporting team Deandra Beckford, Brian Premchand, and Ja’nasia Perrin had the opportunity to interview the Bronx community legislator about education, homelessness, housing, and funding for schools. The students were also able to seek advice for future young leaders: “I want every student to aspire to their highest potential,” Jackson said. “Keep reading, keep writing. Everyone has a story to tell and a unique perspective; the world needs to hear it.”

The Knightly News was first published in September 2022 when the HUM II newspaper club was founded by two teachers who wanted to create a platform for students to share their voices and express themselves. The student newspaper showcases the creativity and ideas of students at HUM II on topics such as art, sports, music, and theater, helping to connect individuals and create opportunities for collaboration.

State Representative Jackson is entering her second term representing district 79 in the Bronx and serves the neighborhoods of Concourse Village, Melrose, Morrisania, Claremont, Belmont, and East Tremont.
