On Saturday, August 17th, The Friends of the Metropolitan Black Bar Association (The 501(c)(3) Charitable arm of the MBBA) is hosting the Annual Hon. Sheila Abdus-Salaam Backpack & School supply giveaway. We will be providing elementary school students in each of the 5 boroughs with a backpack full of school supplies to start off the school year.

Last year, the Department of Education stated that there are 1,135,334 students in the NYC school system, of which 74.0 percent are economically disadvantaged. Of that amount, over half of the children are Black and Latino students. The goal of this pipeline initiative is to address this issue by providing elementary students with school supplies to help them succeed in the school year. No child should have to start the school year without proper supplies. This initiative also provides opportunities for Black lawyers to connect with children and adults in underserved neighborhoods.

Started in 2016 and later renamed in honor of Hon. Sheila Abdus-Salaam, the backpack & school supply giveaway is one of several initiatives the Metropolitan Black Bar Association has created to provide equity to our communities. Donations to this initiative come from all over but a majority come from members of the Legal Community (Black lawyers, judges, law firms, corporate legal departments and more).

MBBA President Jason Clark, Friends of the MBBA President, Paula T. Edgar, MBBA board members, and volunteers will be stationed in one location in each of the 5 boroughs.**

We ask News & Media outlets to join us and showcase our efforts to promote awareness of community needs and shed a positive light on how Black Lawyers come together to support the communities we come from and live in.
