“Our streets are safer when all drivers are licensed. As vehicular crime prosecutors we know this firsthand.
“Our streets are safer when all drivers – regardless of their federal immigration status – can lawfully take driver’s education courses, pass driving tests, obtain proper licensing, and operate registered, inspected, and insured vehicles. Excluding more than 750,000 New Yorkers from this process only makes us less safe, and further undermines trust between law enforcement and immigrant communities.
“I commend Senator Sepúlveda and Assemblyman Crespo for their leadership and collaboration with public safety professionals on this bill, as well as the New York Immigration Coalition and Make the Road New York for their continued advocacy. I urge both houses of the legislature to pass this measure in this session and join twelve other states, including our neighbors in Connecticut and Vermont, in issuing standard driver’s licenses to undocumented New Yorkers as a matter of public safety.”
