Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg, Jr., today announced the sentencing of Rasheen Davis, 40, to 50 years-to-life for attacking a woman from behind as she walked in Harlem, brutally beating her until she was unconscious, and attempting to rape her.
On February 28, 2023, a New York State Supreme Court jury found Davis guilty of one count of Attempted Murder in the Second Degree, two counts of Assault in the First Degree, one count of Robbery in the First Degree and one count of Attempted Rape in the First Degree.
“Today, Rasheen Davis was held accountable for a horrific attack on a New Yorker,” said District Attorney Bragg. “I hope that this sentence delivers some measure of closure for the survivor. Nobody should have to experience this type of injury and trauma, and we will continue to prioritize uplifting survivors and ensuring they have the support and resources they need to recover.”
As proven at trial, on March 18, 2022, at approximately 11:30 p.m., the 43-year-old woman was walking down W. 123rd Street near Lenox Avenue when Davis grabbed her from behind. Davis kicked and punched the woman until she was unconscious and stripped her naked. Davis repeatedly stomped on the woman’s head and attempted to rape her while she lay motionless. Davis stole the woman’s jacket and fled the scene, leaving her next to a pile of trash. The woman suffered internal brain bleeding as a result of the defendant’s attack.
Assistant D.A.s Marcella Lupski of the Violent Criminal Enterprises Unit and James O’Donohue III of Trial Bureau 30 handled the prosecution of this case, under the supervision of Assistant D.A.s Vanessa Puzio (Deputy Chief of the Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Bureau), Shannon Lucey (Deputy Chief of the Special Victims Division), and Nicole Blumberg (Chief of the Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Bureau), as well as Assistant D.A.s Meghan Hast (Deputy Chief of the Violent Criminal Enterprises Unit) and Christopher Prevost (Chief of the Violent Criminal Enterprises Unit). Investigative Analyst Vanessa Reider of the Violent Criminal Enterprises Unit also provided invaluable assistance with the prosecution of the case.
District Attorney Bragg thanked the NYPD, particularly the Manhattan Special Victims Squad for their dedicated detective work.
