NYC Health + Hospitals and MetroPlusHealth were recognized by City & State as 2026 Top Healthcare Organizations for their role in driving the healthcare sector forward and making a significant impact on policy, public health, and the economy across New York State. The inaugural recognition highlights both organizations’ commitment to delivering high-quality, equitable care while addressing the evolving needs of New Yorkers. Together, NYC Health + Hospitals and MetroPlusHealth serve as a cornerstone of the city’s healthcare infrastructure, providing comprehensive services that improve health outcomes and strengthen communities in every borough.

“Being recognized as one of New York’s top healthcare organizations reflects the extraordinary dedication of our workforce and our shared mission to provide high-quality care for every New Yorker,” said NYC Health + Hospitals President and CEO Mitchell Katz, MD. “Together, we are expanding access to care, investing in our workforce, addressing the social factors that influence health, and ensuring that all New Yorkers, regardless of their circumstances, can receive the care and support they need to live healthy lives.”

“We are honored to be recognized among New York’s top healthcare organizations,” said Dr. Talya Schwartz, President and Chief Executive Officer of MetroPlusHealth. “Our mission is to make quality healthcare accessible and affordable while addressing the social needs that shape health and well-being. This recognition reflects the dedication of our team and our strong partnership with NYC Health + Hospitals to improve the lives of New Yorkers every day.”

NYC Health + Hospitals, the nation’s largest municipal healthcare system, serves more than one million New Yorkers annually through its network of 11 hospitals, community health centers, post-acute care facilities, nursing homes, home care services, and MetroPlusHealth. The health system’s 46,000 employees provide compassionate, high-quality care regardless of a patient’s ability to pay, immigration status, or background.

The recognition highlights the health system’s continued investments in access and quality. NYC Health + Hospitals has expanded its primary care patient base to 459,000 New Yorkers, an increase of more than 43,000 unique patients since 2018. In 2024 alone, the system hired more than 3,400 nurses and improved its nurse turnover rate to 7.3%. The public health system also provides approximately 60% of New York City’s behavioral health services and has reduced behavioral health staff turnover from 18% to 8% since 2022.

MetroPlusHealth, the health plan of NYC Health + Hospitals, has provided affordable, quality healthcare to New Yorkers for more than 40 years and serves nearly 700,000 members. The health plan was recognized for its innovative approach to addressing social determinants of health, including programs that help members access food, housing, and transportation. MetroPlusHealth’s extensive provider network includes tens of thousands of providers and more than 40 hospitals and urgent care centers throughout the five boroughs.
