You have the right to seek custody of the minor child or to challenge the adoption.

You may retain counsel to represent you in the adoption proceeding or, if you are financially unable to do so, you may request the Court to appoint an attorney to represent you pursuant to D.C. Code § 16-316 (2009).
Your failure to respond to this Notice of Adoption Proceeding and Order to Show Cause can result in the waiver of your consent to this adoption, and the termination of your legal rights, responsibilities and obligations with respect to the child. Unless you appear for the Show Cause Hearing or file a written objection prior to the hearing, you may not receive notice of subsequent court action and/or proceedings in the case.
