Memorial Day is coming on Monday, May 27, which means the MTA will add extra trains on Friday, May 24, to help New Yorkers get an early start on the long three-day weekend. On Memorial Day, trains and buses will operate on reduced schedules in accordance with ridership well below normal weekday levels. Long Island Rail Road
On Friday, May 25, the Long Island Rail Road is adding 10 extra afternoon trains departing Penn Station between 01:59 p.m. and 03:48 p.m. For details, please see the attached press release.
On Memorial Day, Monday, May 27, the LIRR will operate on a holiday schedule.
On Friday, May 25, Metro-North Railroad is adding 17 extra afternoon trains departing Grand Central Terminal between 12:58 p.m. and 04:11 p.m. Some trains between 05:18 p.m. and 07:28 p.m. will be canceled and combined due to reduced ridership in this time period. New York City Subway
On Memorial Day, Monday, May 27, the New York City Subway will operate on a Sunday schedule. As a reminder, some subway lines do not run on weekends and some trains will be rerouted due to pre-scheduled maintenance and upgrade work in our efforts to maintain and upgrade tracks, signals, stations and other infrastructure throughout the subway system.
Customers are advised to allow additional travel time and use the MYmta app to plan trips, view planned and unplanned service change information and see real-time anticipated arrival times.
New York City Buses

Staten Island Railway
On Memorial Day, Monday, May 27, Staten Island Railway will operate on a Sunday schedule. SIR will operate its Early Departure Get Away schedule on Friday, May 24 to accommodate customers looking to get an early start on their holiday weekend plans. This schedule means extra SIR trains will be added earlier in the afternoon beginning at 2:30 p.m. from the St. George Ferry Terminal. There will be one express train and one local train awaiting every boat until 7:50 p.m. The Early Departure Get Away service plan on SIR is also available on Wednesday, July 3 (before Independence Day), Labor Day weekend, Christmas and New Year’s. It will also operate on the day before Thanksgiving.
MTA Bridges and Tunnels
MTA Bridges and Tunnels will suspend all scheduled maintenance work beginning at 1 p.m. on Friday, May 24, through the end of the morning rush on Tuesday, May 28, to accommodate motorists traveling throughout the busy travel weekend. Any extraordinary weather-critical work that must be accomplished over the holiday weekend would occur only during overnight hours when traffic is at its lightest.
